On a camping/driving adventure tour through the western Colorado Plateau, Eric and I spent a spectacular day on photo tour with a Navajo (Diné) guide, being chauffeured around, bounding over sand dunes in a big old Ford SUV, photographing the area.

Slot canyons are incredible geologic phenomena, carved by flash floods. Here, you will see the sweeping curves of sandstone, in its beautiful orange and purple colors. I show the rough and smooth textures in the canyon walls, and some more intimate features, carved by the water.

These images were taken under Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department Special Use Permit No. 2829, May 10, 2018, in accordance with the guidelines of the International League of Conservation Photographers. It is important both that we preserve the beautiful slot canyons for future generations and that we honor the people who live there by paying the required photography permit fees.
